Administrative Inspection of District Jail, Jammu
Jammu, February 29th '2012: The Administrative Inspection of District Jail Jammu was carried out by Shri Navin Agarwal, IPS Director General of Prisons, on 27th and 28th of February, 2012 . The formal Inspection of this Jail was last held in the year 2002 and was now held after a gap of 10 years.
An open darbar of the 531 prisoners lodged in the Jail complex was held. As many as 29 prisoners of various categories narrated different kinds of problems being faced by them before the DG Prisons. The problems ranged from non production of some of the undertrials before the courts for several months due to non availability of escorts in some cases to some other cases of being wrongly implicated by the investigating agency. Some prisoners requested for premature release while some requested for providing facilities for higher education. Some Foreign nationals confessed before the DG Prisons of having giving fake name and addresss at the time of arrest due to which they are still unable to be repatriated to their home countries despite their having completed their sentences. The DG Prisons assured them that their genuine problems will be looked into sympathetically and shall be considered for redressal. Addressing the Darbar, the DG Prisons stated that prisoners are mostly victims of circumstances and they deserve a humane treatment. He exhorted the prison inmates that they should utilize their time inside the Prison in a useful and productive manner so that they come out as better citizens upon their release.
In order to know the problems of the staff posted in the Jail another Darbar was also conducted separately for the Head Warders and Warders. Some problems pertaining to uniform, promotions and pay fixations were discussed. The DG Prisons expressed satisfaction over starting of common messing facilities for the staff recently. Shri Agarwal also visited the stores of District Jail Jammu, Warder barracks and recreational Hall and passed orders to the Technical Officer for the plastering, electrification and also providing of almirahs in the warder barracks.
Officers accompanying Director General of Prisons during the Inspection included Shri. Javid Masood Fazili, Staff Officer, Shri Sanjay Kumar, Chief Accounts Officer, Shri Virender Razdan, Technical officer and Dr. Vinod Kumar, Superintendent District Jail Jammu.
