Pulwama has a District Jail

Pulwama (Kashmir) - J&K, May 15th '2012: Director General Prisons, Navin Agarwal, IPS paid a visit to under construction District Jail Pulwama. He was accompanied by Amit Kumar, IPS SSP Pulwama, Muneer-ul-Islam Additional Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, N.Shiv Shankara Commandant CRPF 182 Bn and Virender Razdan Technical Officer to DG Prisons. He had a round of the site where Prisoners Barracks, Administrative Block, Residential Quarters, Frisking Room etc. are under construction under the Scheme of Modernization of Prisons.
DG Prisons said that there is at present no jail functioning in districts Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam of south Kashmir. The undertrial prisoners belonging to these south Kashmir districts are lodged in other jails particularly in Central Jail Srinagar as a result it has become overcrowded and congested. In order to decongest the Central Jail Srinagar and other Jails and to speed up the judicial trials of Prisoners, it has become quite imperative to start a new additional jail in south Kashmir to cater the needs of the undertrials of the districts Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam. He said that the Government has desired for early commissioning of the new District Jail Pulwama. The target date for commissioning of new District Jail Pulwama has been earmarked as 31st October, 2012. Agarwal expressed confidence about commissioning the jail well before the target date.
