Painting Competition for the Inmates

Jammu - J&K, December 9th '2013: A Painting Competition called ‘Creative Outlet’ was organized for the Prison Inmates on the 9th of December, 2013 at Central Jail Jammu Kotbhalwal, Central Jail Srinagar and District Jail Jammu by the J&K Prisons Department in collaboration with Institute of Music and Fine Arts, University of Kashmir. The painting Competition was organized with the aim to provide an avenue for self expression to the inmates, build confidence and to bring a sense of accomplishment. The Director General of Prisons, J&K Shri K.Rajendra Kumar, IPS visited the District Jail Amphalla to witness the event and distributed prizes among the winners. Shri K. Rajendra Kumar in his speech talked about the freedom of mind as the real and genuine form of freedom which even the incarcerated can enjoy. He encouraged the inmates to participate in Music and Arts as they can provide a constructive outlet to the inner feelings of the inmates. He emphasized that Art has the power to bring peace and solace to an individual and provides a memorable experience.

On the occasion the Director General of Prisons said that the Department intends to start Art and Music classes for the inmates in the near future as it will certainly have tremendous positive effects on the psyche and well being of the inmates.
