J&K Prisons Department released Calendar 2018
on the occasion of New Year

Jammu - J&K, January 2nd 2018: Shri S.K. Mishra, IPS Director General of Police, Prisons J&K released the Departmental Calendar 2018, in a simple but impressive ceremony held at Prison Headquarters Amphalla Jammu today on 01.01.2018. Besides, 2018 diaries, News letter December, 2017 were also released & distributed. News letter will also be circulated to the outside agencies. The achievements of J&K Prisons Department during 2017 were highlighted on the occasion and are summarized as below:

  1. A new District Jail called as Special Jail ( Correctional Home) Pulwama got operational on 09.09.2017 in pursuance to Govt. order No. 1289- Home of 2017 dated 09.09.2017 wherein young offenders are lodged as a target group for special programmes of correction.
  2. New Jail building at Bhaderwah; new District Jail Kargil are under construction to be completed within short span of time.
  3. The Institutions ( Jails ) have been enriched and security strengthened with the introduction and supply of modern security gadgets like X-ray baggage scanners, DFMDs, Walkie-Talkie and up gradation of CCTV surveillance system by way of installation of high-tech security cameras at strategic points.
  4. Female Prisoner Block at District Jail Jammu and Central Jail Jammu KB have been upgraded with better sanitary conditions. Special care is taken to attend to the welfare of female inmates in the Jails concerned.
  5. Skill Development Centre for imparting training to Jail inmates at Central Jail Srinagar and District Jail Kishtwar have been started in collaboration with the NGOs. Art of Living NGO has in particular set up a computer lab in Central Jail Srinagar and has also started three months short term course on house wiring for inmates there.
  6. Opening of Beauty Salon at District Jail Jammu for imparting training to the female inmates by the Women Polytechnic College Jammu has been a remarkable achievement of the year.
  7. Prison Training Institute named as Institute of Correctional Services was made functional at Mishriwalla Jammu in the year under report wherein two short term training courses for Prison staff concluded whereas 6 months basic training course for recently regularized Jail Warders is under way w.e.f 4th December, 2017 which is also a landmark achievement by the Department as having their own first ever training institute.
  8. In addition to the above, adult literacy programmes, Technical/Vocational programmes including cutting and tailoring, motor winding, candle making, weaving etc. form regular feature of our prison administration.
  9. In formal education, 13 number of prisoners have completed BA level education and 163 have passed out different courses through special study centres of IGNOU available in the Jails.
  10. Other than Annual sports and games events in all the Jails, leisure time activities also include periodical cultural programmes on the eve of different festivals like Diwali, Eid etc. being organized by the inmates and also through outside agencies like Information Department.
  11. Moreover, Stress Management Programmes like discussions, Yoga, Meditation especially through Art of Living – NGO are being held in most of the Jails.
  12. “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” is another regular feature to ensure implementation of cleanliness drive initiated Nationwide.
  13. Work on e-Prison rather e-goverance has been started.

The officers present on the occasion include Shri Javid Masood Fazili Sr. Superintendent Central Jail Kotbhalwal Jammu, Shri Dinesh Sharma Sr. Superintendent District Jail Jammu, Shri Hilal Ahmad Rather Superintendent Central Jail Srinagar, besides officers of Prisons Headquarters Dr. Mohd Sultan Lone DIG Prisons, Shri Sanjay Kumar FA/CAO, Shri S.A Beig Staff Officer to DGP Prisons.
