Prisoner manufactured Products Retail Outlet near District Jail Amphalla

Jammu - J&K, Januar 13th 2018: The J&K Prisons Department has opened a retail outlet 'Sudhar Bikri Kendra' near District Jail Amphalla for marketing and sale of prisoner manufactured products. The outlet was inaugurated today by the Hon'ble Speaker of J&K legislative Assembly Sh. Kavinder Gupta in presence of DGP Prisons Sh. S. K. Mishra IPS.

The outlet has a wide variety of products manufactured by prison inmates after undergoing vocational trainings in the Jails of the State. Products ranging from candles to Furnishing items, bedding items, readymade garments, wooden furniture, handicrafts like papier-mâché, crewel embroidered cloth to shirting material are available for sale at the outlet.

Speaking on the o ccasion the DGP Prisons said that the initiative has been taken to meet the twin objective of enabling prison inmates to earn livelihood while serving sentences and projecting the reformation programs run in the jails. He said that the products on display have gone through an internal quality check in the jails and are offered at competitive market prices. He informed that the Department took this initiative after receiving overwhelming response from users of jail made products.

The jail made products were earlier put to sale at a small shop which has now been upgraded and converted into this Sudhar Bikri Kendra and also at various exhibitions and Police Melas.

Following the Inauguration, Lohri the festival that commemorates the passing of winter solstice was celebrated at District Jail Jammu with great fervour.

During the program cultural extravaganza was presented by the jail inmates. The jail premises reverberated with popular Lohri folk songs. The performances of inmates highlighted the cultural significance of Lohri.

The DGP Prison S.K. Mishra, IPS extended warm wishes to the inmates and staff on this occasion. Special food and sweets were provided to the inmates. Prominent among others who attended the program were DIG Prison Dr. M.S. Lone, Sr. Superintendent, Javeed Masood Fazili, Sr. Superintendent, Dinesh Sharma, S. Ahmad, S.O. to DGP Prisons, Sh. Shabir Ahmad Kumar, Technical Officer to DGP Prisons, Smt. Rajni Sehgal, Superintendent, District Jail Udhampur and Ms. Saba Shawl, Principal ICS Mishriwalla Jammu. Besides, doctors and other senior officers of the Department were present on the occasion.
